Board Highlights for the September 24, 2019 Meeting of the Board of Education

Celebrating Success

A presentation was given by three Alice Gustafson Elementary students, Zachary Brandon, Logan Hendricks, and Avery Sheehan on K-Kids. K-Kids is now offered in each Batavia elementary school and is the younger sibling of Key Club, which is a youth version of the Kiwanis Club. The students spoke about service projects including collecting plastic bottle tops to raise money for a recycled-plastic bench for their school.

Student Ambassador Report

The student ambassadors talked about how great Homecoming Week was and that the Class Olympics were especially fun. Check out some pictures of the week on BPS101Pride. Ambassador Joe also mentioned that the Marching Band will be competing at NIU on September 28.

Public Comment

There were no requests for public comment.

BPS Partner Reports

Todd Swanson, Batavia Education Association President, congratulated the High School for being safe over Homecoming Week. He also mentioned that a Batavia High School Teacher, and former BEA President, Amy Biancheri, was appointed by Governor Pritzker to his Affirming and Inclusive School Task Force. The group is tasked with finding strategies and best practices for ensuring “welcoming, safe, supportive, and inclusive school environments” for transgender, nonbinary, and gender-nonconforming students. 

Building our Future Together: Phase 2 Update

The DLR Group presented an update on Phase 2 of the Educational Master Facility Plan. Here is the presentation. They will also be presenting at a community open house on Thursday, September 26 at 6:30 PM at Rotolo Middle School. Please join us and have your voice be heard.

Policy Reading

Quite a bit of time was spent discussing the nuances of this policy. The Board was very clear that they want to hear all voices when it comes to public comment.

Committee Reports

Jon Gaspar shared with the Board of Education and the public that the Hall of Honor was a very nice event and reminded us that nominations are now open for the 2020 Hall of Honor.
