Board Highlights from the December 17, 2019 Meeting

December 17, 2019 Board Meeting notes for Board Highlights – Here is the Agenda for the meeting.

Student Ambassador Report

Lots of tests this week and a lot of volunteer projects going on. Proud of the Illinois State Scholars. They love all of the extracurricular activities like GIRLs wrestling and dance. Here is a copy of their slides.

BPS Partner Reports

Todd Swanson, Batavia Education Association President, began by wishing everyone a Happy Holiday Season. You may not see it at the meeting, but at work, Todd has been wearing silly holiday sweaters and sweatshirts to work, typically with coordinating silly socks. Ask Todd which is his favorite one. Todd, in the spirit of the holiday season, read everyone a poem that he wrote about the holidays, incorporating many references to students taking finals and the hustle of these last weeks of school before break. If you don’t know Todd, you should make an effort to meet him and get to know him.

Committee Reports

John Gaspar mentioned that nominations are being accepted for the 2020 Hall of Honor. You can find information on the nomination process HERE.

All Board Members wished the community Happy Holidays!

Board Member Meadows spoke about the last RAC meeting including school start times and transportation. No action at this time. The research ended with a very little known financial benefit, relating to transportation cost savings, to adjusting start times.

CAAC: looking at classroom capacity, a pilot in first-grade reading, the curriculum in third through fifth-grade Social Studies.

BFEE Scavenger Hunt Feb 29, grant applications being accepted through Feb 7, they are currently accepting scholarship applications with a deadline of March 6th. Details can be found at BFEE.

Building our Future Together: Stay up to date here. We are near completion of Phase 2. Next Core Team meeting is Jan 13 at JB Nelson.

Policy Report

Some important policy changes were discussed including Cannabis, Abuse Reporting, and Harassment Policies. Find details on the policies that were up for discussion this month HERE.

2020-21 School Calendar

The 2020-21 School Calendar was approved. There are some dates of note. August 12, 2020, is the first day of school. Seems early, but falls in line with other Districts. It will reset next year and be a bit later. Look at Columbus Day and Veteran’s Day. Combined a couple of half-days into one full Institute Day.

Tony Inglese presented the Financial Report. Here are the details.

Boardwalk Shops Community Partnership

BPS101 has partnered with the City of Batavia and Batavia MainStreet on a “Boardwalk Shops” project.  The plan is to build several tiny, shed-like buildings for small businesses to rent during the summer in downtown Batavia. Through this partnership, the Building Trades classes at the high school would construct some of the shops. The architectural renderings and site plans provide additional information about the project, and the parties have drafted a partnership agreement that outlines everyone’s responsibilities.

The meeting ended with the spread of holiday good wishes to all.

Meeting adjourned around 7:50 PM
