Supporting Research

This indicator shows the growth of our students who score at or below the 30th percentile on the NWEA MAP math and reading assessments. The indicator examines the growth from three (3) lens: the percent of students who grew one percentile, the percent of students who grew to the 40th percentile or greater, and the percent of students who grew by 10 percent or more. BPS101 believes that a strong core curriculum and additional support lead to success for struggling students.  

Chart Description

These line graphs show the performance of our most academically at-risk students. All three metrics show consistent performance in growing students who are at or below the 30th percentile nationally. Academic interventions through our Multi-Tiered System of Support (MTSS) contribute to this outstanding growth. Due to COVID-19, the NWEA MAP growth data is unavailable for the 2019-20 and 2020-21 academic years.

Supporting Research

While not a traditional academic growth metric, a growth mindset is essential to student success. Taken from the student perception Tripod survey, this indicator shows the percent of students answering questions that indicate their growth mindset, a key indicator to learning potential (Dweck, 2007). There is currently only one year’s worth of data but this metric will be tracked over time.

The bar chart shows the percent of student agreement with questions on the Tripod survey related to growth mindset gauged through student reflection of their effort and belief that they can do challenging work.  Data is displayed by grade level bands and is for the academic years ending in 2019 and 2021. Data for 2020 is unavailable due to COVID-19.

Supporting Research

This indicator shows percentile growth for students in grades 1 through 9. Percentile growth is achieved when students outpace their expected growth. This metric shows the capacity of quality instruction to outpace national mean growth and close the achievement gap. NWEA’s MAP assessment is a nationally normed assessment in reading and mathematics.

This bar chart with three years of data shows the percent of students tested with MAP who gres one percentile or more from fall to spring. Scores remain relatively constant with a range of 54 to 57 in math and 53 to 58 in reading. This data shows that Batavia can grow students better than the normed average in any given year.  Due to COVID-19, the NWEA MAP growth data is unavailable for the 2019-20 and 2020-21 academic years.

College Readiness Benchmark Scores (CRB) is the minimum score needed on an SAT subject-area test to indicate a 75% chance of obtaining a C or higher in the corresponding credit-bearing college courses.The College Board’s SAT test is an indicator for college success and retention (Westrick, et al, 2019). The benchmark is 530 for math and 480 for evidence based reading and writing.

This bar chart shows three years of data for the SAT on the state test day for math, evidence-based reading and writing (EBRW). The “both” part of the chart shows the percent of students who met in both sub-tests. Modest improvements were seen from 2018 to 2019.  2020 data may be impacted due to COVID-19.  2021 data will be available in July.

The Freshmen on Track indicator is a measure of the percentage of the Freshmen class that is on track to graduate based on criteria set by the State of Illinois.  Currently, this criteria is having earned at least five full-year course credits (10 semester credits) and have no more than one semester “F” in a core course (English, math, science, or social science). Having freshmen on track is highly correlated to graduation rates (Allensworth & Easton, 2015) and helps identify when interventions are needed for students.

This bar chart shows three years of data comparing Batavia High School freshmen to the State of Illinois. The chart shows the percent of students on track. Batavia is consistently in the middle to high 90 percent of students being on track and well above the State of Illinois.  2021 data will be available in the fall.

This line graph shows the percent of juniors and seniors at BHS who are engaged in coursework and programming that represent early college course work.  These experiences may include Advanced Placement Courses (AP) or Dual Credit classes through Waubonsee Community College.

Supporting Research

Post-secondary experiences while in high school are influential in enrollment and persistence/attainment. In addition to these early college experiences, students may additional be enrolled in courses that offer articulated credit--this is an option for many of our Career and Technical Education courses at BHS and through the Fox Valley Career Center. 

3rd Grade Reading Proficiency

The 3rd Grade Reading Proficiency indicator is a measure of students who met or exceeded grade level expectations on MAP reading.  Students reaching reading proficiency by the end of third grade find greater academic success in elementary school and beyond. This impact is more profound for at-risk students (Francis, Shaywitz, Stuebing, Shaywitz, & Fletcher, 1996; Lesnick, Goerge, Smithgall. & Gwynne, 2010; Hernandez, 2011).

Reading is consistent in the mid 70 percent of students. Math in 5th grade is more variable with a dip in performance from 74% in 2018 to 66.8% in 2019. 5th Grade Math Proficiency

The 5th Grade Math Proficiency indicator is a measure of students who met or exceeded grade level expectations on MAP math. Early achievement on math is often a predictor for future math success in school and the development of a positive self-concept with math that research suggests has a strong correlation to math growth (Duncan, 2007; Montague, et al, 2011).
