Supporting Research

The Captivate indicator comes from a segment of the Tripod survey, a student perception survey administered to K-12 students. Based on the Bill and Melinda Gates’s Measures of Effective Teacher (METS) research, this perception survey is highly correlated to student achievement. This metric identified one of the 7 C’s --captivate. Feedback from students shows if students feel engaged and interested in what they are learning. This measure is strongly correlated to effort regardless of achievement.

The bar chart shows the percent of student agreement with questions on the Tripod survey related to whether school is engaging, interesting, and enjoyable.  Data is displayed by grade level bands and is for the academic years ending in 2019 and 2021. Data for 2020 is unavailable due to COVID-19.

Supporting Research

Batavia Public Schools offers a wide variety of extra-curricular and co-curricular options for students. Research (DeMeulenaere, 2010; Fox et al., 2010; Mahoney et al., 2003) indicates that students who participate in activities beyond the school day have higher levels of achievement as well as some positive social impacts.   

Chart Description

This bar chart shows the percent of students involved in school-sponsored extracurricular activities, including music, the arts, sports, and clubs.  Data is displayed by school for three years. Participation in the spring of 2020, as well as the entire academic year of 2020-21 was impacted due to COVID-19. The District will continue to work to provide equitable experiences for students beyond the school day. 

Supporting Research

The Attendance indicator shows the average daily attendance for the district over the course of the last 5 years.  Students who attend school regularly achieve at higher levels than students not regularly in attendance, as well has have higher levels of educational and social engagement.  (Gottfried, 2009, 2011; Reynolds et al., 1992; Steward et al., 2008). 

Chart Description

This bar chart shows the percent of the average daily attendance for BPS101 in comparison to the State of Illinois for three years. BPS101 attendance is commensurate with the State and steady at around 94%. The District continues to look at attendance interventions for chronic truants (missing 5% or more of school days) and to partner with parents to assure that students are at school and learning whenever possible. 2021 data will be available in the fall.

There are metrics for the   Safe and Caring Indicators that the District uses to track student perceptions, including their perceptions of their peers and the safety of the school climate. Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs and other theoretical learning frameworks show safety as a precursor to learning.  Research indicates that students' perceptions of safety and caring are predictive of academic achievement (Anderson, 1982; Wang & Holcomb, 2010).

Data for both 5Essentials and Tripod are unavailable for 2020 due to COVID-19.
