At their meeting on Tuesday, June 21, Superintendent Dr. Lisa Hichens informed the BPS101 Board of Education that she would retire as superintendent at the end of the 2022-23 school year after 26 years of service as an educator. The 2022-23 school year will be her 22nd year of service in BPS101.

“It has been an honor and privilege to serve this community,” Dr. Hichens said. “I am looking forward to the upcoming school year and optimistic about the future of the District.”

Dr. Hichens began serving the Batavia Community in 1994 as a math teacher at Batavia High School. She then grew into other leadership roles at Batavia High School, including serving as Dean of Students, Assistant Principal of Teaching and Learning, and Principal. Hichens has been superintendent of schools since the 2013-14 school year.

Hichens earned her Ed. Doctorate in Leadership in Curriculum and Instruction from Aurora University, where she also earned her superintendent’s endorsement. She received her Master of Science degree in Educational Leadership and her Type 75 General Administrative Certificate from Northern Illinois University. Hichens earned her Bachelor of Science degree at the University of Illinois.

Following the announcement, BPS101 Board of Education President Cathy Dremel stated, “I am incredibly proud to have served with Lisa over the past nine years.  She has a genuine passion for student success and has been a tireless advocate for the staff of Batavia Public Schools.   BPS101 has greatly benefited from Lisa’s results-driven leadership and will be missed tremendously by this board, the staff, and the community.”

“Lisa is leaving behind a legacy of leadership,” President Dremel continued. “ We are confident that the District remains in skillful hands thanks to her expertise in building teams, expanding capacity, and developing talent. Her dedication to providing outstanding education to the children within BPS101, and preparing them for college and careers, is unparalleled. While we are saddened to have her leave us, we are excited about the District’s direction thanks to her efforts over the past decade.”

Dr. Hichens will work with the Board of Education and administration to ensure a smooth transition for the District. She credits the school board for their passionate commitment, stating they “continue to be a strong and resilient team of 7 with an unwavering commitment to children in support of the highest level of achievement for all students.”

“The next leader of BPS101 can feel confident that the board and staff will continue to work together on behalf of all students,” she added.

“I am thankful for every member of this community, every family and child I have met along the way, and I wish only the best for BPS101 in the future. I will always be a proud Bulldog at heart.”
