Leaving a Creative Legacy
The art hallway at Batavia High School is getting more colorful by the day.
BHS senior and art student, Isabel Walker, is using a watercolor wash technique to paint a mural in the hallway that connects BHS art classes. The mural is her Independent Study project, and, when completed, will serve as the home of achievement awards that art students have earned throughout their Batavia High School careers. In essence, the wall will become a storyteller.
“It took about three weeks to work on the rough draft. It will take me about a month or a month-and-a-half [during class time] to complete it,” explained Isabel when asked about the project timeline.

Isabel worked with BHS art teachers Dawn Zalkus and Andrea Schindlbeck on the mural concept and said she had quite a bit of free reign.
“We gave her a quick overview of what our goal was for this space and asked her to think up something fluid and dynamic with washes of color. Then we worked together through several stages of refinements to make sure the final design had a strong structure and interesting details,” said Ms. Schindlbeck. “We are super excited to see the finished piece.”
Isabel, who is planning on studying costume or fashion design in college, is also in the process of planning and designing pieces for the 2018 BHS Rock the Runway show, which is set for March 16, 7:30 p.m. at the Batavia Fine Arts Center. Here’s a peek at one of Isabel’s Rock the Runway designs …
