Joe Caltagirone Named Student Ambassador to the Board of Education

Joe Caltagirone

Incoming sophomore Joe Caltagirone was recently selected by the BPS101 Board of Education to be its next Student Ambassador.

Each year, the Board appoints one Batavia High School student to serve a two-year term as a Student Ambassador. Student Ambassadors represent the BPS101 student body at all regular Board Meetings and communicate the student body’s viewpoint on issues before the Board. Joe is replacing outgoing Student Ambassador and 2019 BHS graduate Chris Theros.

Get to know Joe …

Why did you decide to apply for the Student Ambassadorship?
I applied because I had written an article on the position for the school newspaper at the beginning of this year, and since then my interest was sparked. I think it is a really cool idea, and I want to be a part of something not all districts have.

What are you most excited about doing during your two-year term?
I’m most excited to see how the Board works. I have a vague idea of what they do, although I don’t know many specifics. I’ve been to a couple of meetings, and I’m really interested to see the work process, how the Board functions, and help the Board relate to students.

How would you describe your leadership style?
I would describe my leadership style as leading by example. If I am in a leadership role, I try and set the example for what I want others to do. Whether or not I actually succeed in setting that example is another thing, but I give it my best effort.

If you didn’t have to sleep, what would you do with the extra time?
I would definitely use that time to get better at the piano. I’m very music-oriented, I’m in jazz band, band class, and recently signed up for marching band. Music takes up most of my extracurricular time, and that’s good because I really enjoy it.

Favorite BHS class so far?
My favorite class so far has been band. The teachers are great, all of my friends are in it, and I love playing music. All of my extracurricular activities take place in the band room, so I have made lots of friends and developed a relationship with both of the band teachers.
