Celebrating Katie Jonak

Louise White Elementary School students, staff members, parents, and other family and friends recently gathered behind the school to dedicate a special space in memory of LWS student Katie Jonak.

Last year, when the project was started, the area just an unused area of grass on the edge of the playground.

The story of the transformation from plain grass to a place for students to play and perform is a testament to Katie. Her story sparked into action so many people from inside and outside of LWS who were moved to donate their resources, talents, and time to bringing the space to life. The LWS PTO leadership team worked with the Jonak family and the architects at GreenbergFarrow, including Jennifer Mowen and Lori Vierow, to develop the concept.

Tim Caldwell and his staff from landscaping company, The Savanna Group, Inc., in North Aurora, Ill., worked with many parent volunteers to take those designs and bring them to life. Under Mr. Caldwell’s guidance, LWS volunteers spent a weekend digging holes (lots of holes!), moving dirt and gravel, laying the bricks, and building the stage.

LWS students now have a very special hopscotch court!

LWS students now play on a special hopscotch court that calls attention to important life lessons in a playful way.

“It was the generosity of time and talent and the collaboration of the entire community that brought the stage to life,” said Dr. Kevin Skomer, LWS Principal, at the dedication celebration. “What I have found even more amazing than watching the space come to life is watching how the space is being used. I have seen many impromptu plays and dance recitals. It has served as home base for countless games of tag and even a lounge area to catch some rays. Most of what I have seen, though, is that it really is the gathering place of the playground. Anyone who is looking for something to do, or someone to play with, can find them here.”

Dr. Skomer closed the dedication with the following reflective message:

“As we dedicate this space today, let us remember the lesson Katie taught us. It is through generosity, kindness, and collaboration that amazing things can happen. We must also remember the lessons that are etched in the brick: Play, Think of Others, Read, Love Much, Be Grateful, Laugh, Dance, Appreciate the Small Things, Make Music, Work Hard, Be Kind, Smile Often, and Have Faith.”
