The Batavia High School Art & Media Program has been nominated for “Best School Art Program in Illinois” through the Illinois Art Education Association.

This award is based on curriculum design, course offerings, extracurricular activities for students, professional contributions, service to community, and service to the art education profession.

The Art & Media program has worked hard to enrich curriculum and expand opportunities for students through such additions as art competitions, regional exhibitions, guest speakers, the CTE showcase, the Fine Arts Festival, National Art Honor Society (NAHS), and BHS Rock the Runway.

In addition, BHS Art Teacher Dawn Zalkus has been nominated for Illinois Secondary Art Educator of the Year. This award is based on general professional achievement, service to individual school program and school district, service to community, and service to the art education profession.

Ms. Zalkus initiated the start up of Batavia High School’s National NAHS chapter, has developed an incredible wearable art fashion show with Rock the Runway, and continues to seek out new opportunities for students to be involved in the arts and celebrated for their achievements.

Awards will be announced in June.
