05: Attendance and Truancy
Being in school on time every day matters. Good attendance helps you learn, build routines, and succeed. Parents/guardians are expected to notify the school if a student will be absent. Students are expected to make up any work missed.
Expectations
- Arrive on time and stay for the full day.
- Call the school’s attendance line, if absent.
- Provide a valid reason (illness, religious holiday, family emergency, etc.).
- Extended absences may qualify for home/hospital instruction with a doctor’s note.
Policy / Legal Requirements
- Illinois law requires daily attendance for students ages 6 to 17 (105 ILCS 5/26-1).
- Chronic absenteeism is missing 10% or more of school days for any reason.
- Chronic truancy = 5% or more unexcused absences in the past 180 school days.
- Excessive unexcused absences are referred to the Kane County Regional Office of Education.
- Board Policy 7:70 (Attendance and Truancy) governs attendance expectations and procedures.
