Quick Reference Guide

The following is a quick reference guide providing direction for responding to emergency situations within District facilities after regular school hours. Authorized users are responsible for accounting for persons under their supervision. Please notify BPS After Hours On-Call Emergency Services at (630) 937-8311 should any emergency incident occur.

Fire/Explosions (Fire Alarm)

  • Evacuate the building following posted evacuation routes.
  • Call 911 and meet first responders outside to provide any pertinent information about the cause and location.
  • Notify BPS After Hours On-Call Emergency Services at (630) 937-8311.

Severe Weather

  • Monitor public information sources, local news, and Weather Channel if severe weather appears imminent.
  • If a Severe Thunderstorm Warning or Tornado Warning is issued, take cover immediately.
  • Move to inner hallways, interior classroom, restrooms, or locker rooms.
  • Do not use gymnasiums, cafeteria, large free-span roof areas, or locations with large amounts of glass windows.
  • Remain in a safe area until the warning has expired.

Medical Emergency

  • Quickly assess the situation and call 911 if necessary.
  • Provide emergency medical attention, first aid, CPR, AED.
  • Meet first responders at the entrance and guide to victim.
  • Notify BPS After Hours On-Call Emergency Services at (630) 937-8311.

Armed Intruder

  • If an armed intruder enters the building, quickly determine if it is safer to hide in a secure/safe area or flee the building.
  • Call 911 to provide information to reference the identity of the offender(s), description, location, and type of weapon.
  • If you have fled the building, meet first responders outside and provide additional information, if possible.
  • Notify BPS After Hours On-Call Emergency Services at (630) 937-8311.

Bomb Threat

  • Make a record of the exact wording of the call.
  • Ask caller where the device is located, when it will detonate, why the device was placed, who is calling, and note Caller ID, if equipped.
  • Note speech patterns, language, accents, and any background noises.
  • Call 911
  • Strongly consider evacuation of the building more than 500 feet.
