16: Health and Wellness
Student health and safety support learning. Families should keep students home when they are ill and notify the school of health concerns that may affect the school day.
Families should:
- Keep emergency contact information current.
- Keep students home if they have a fever (100.4°F or higher), vomiting, diarrhea, or a contagious illness.
- Submit physical exams and immunizations by applicable deadlines.
- Medication may be administered at school only as permitted by Board policy and BPS101 procedures. Most medication must be kept in the health office and requires appropriate authorization. Students may not carry medication unless authorized under Board policy, law, and school health procedures.
- Notify the school health office of serious allergies, chronic health conditions, activity restrictions, medication needs, or emergency care concerns.
- Contact the school health office to discuss individualized health supports when needed.
Students may be excluded from school when required health records are not provided, unless an exemption or other exception applies under law.
Medication may be administered at school only as permitted by Board policy and BPS101 procedures. Most medication must be kept in the health office and requires appropriate authorization. Students may not carry or self-administer medication unless authorized under Board policy, law, and school health procedures.
Students may be excused from physical education or other activities only as permitted by law, Board policy, school procedures, and appropriate medical documentation.
Policy / Legal Requirements
- Physicals, immunizations, and dental/vision exams required by 105 ILCS 5/27-8.1.
- Medication procedures are governed by Board Policy 7:270 (Administering Medicines).
- Allergy and anaphylaxis management are covered by Board Policy 7:285.
- Communicable disease policies follow Board Policy 7:280.
- Health records are confidential and maintained in accordance with the Illinois School Student Records Act.
