Radon Testing
We voluntarily conduct radon testing in our schools as part of our commitment to maintaining a safe, healthy learning environment. Although radon testing is not required by law, both the Illinois Emergency Management Agency (IEMA) and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) recommend it. We follow this guidance as a proactive safety measure.
Summary of Results
Radon testing was completed in every school during spring and summer 2025. Two schools had specific rooms with elevated levels:
School | Location(s) | Action |
---|---|---|
Alice Gustafson Elementary | Classroom 147 | Mitigation system installed |
Batavia High School | Classroom D110; Offices B101E, B100G, B100J | Mitigation system installed |
Follow-up testing confirmed the mitigation systems were effective, and all locations are now below the EPA action level of 4.0 picocuries per liter (pCi/L).
