School Boundary Assignment Under Consideration for Abbey Meadows and Harvest Point
Batavia Public School District 101 is preparing to assign school boundaries for students who will reside in the new Abbey Meadows and Harvest Point subdivisions now under construction on Raddant Road near the intersection of Butterfield Road. The Board of Education is scheduled to consider this matter on April 21.

Why this is happening now
The District has not adjusted elementary school boundaries in more than 20 years. As new residential areas develop, it is best to adjust boundaries before neighborhoods are occupied. Doing so helps avoid future disruption and supports balanced enrollment across schools.
How boundary decisions are made
When considering boundary assignments for new developments, the District reviews several factors, including:
- available capacity across schools
- long-term enrollment balance
- proximity, where it aligns with overall system needs
- transportation feasibility
Proximity is an important consideration, but it is not the only factor.
Current context
At present, the boundary for these developments is J.B. Nelson School. Hoover-Wood School is within walking distance (less than 1.5 miles) for all the future homes and has available capacity. J.B. Nelson School is operating closer to capacity.
The Board is considering how to assign these neighborhoods in a way that supports its traditional approach to neighborhood schools and enrollment balance across the District.
Current status
No final decision has been made.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why is the District making this decision?
New residential development requires student assignment to maintain balanced enrollment and effective use of school capacity.
Why now, after 20+ years?
Enrollment has been stable or declining. New growth now requires a prudent assignment approach.
What factors are considered?
Proximity, capacity, enrollment balance, and transportation.
Is there a policy?
The District applies prudent criteria to guide assignments. This approach will be used for future developments.
Why are students being assigned to Hoover-Wood School?
Abbey Meadows and Harvest Point are within walking distance (less than 1.5 miles) of Hoover-Wood School, and Hoover-Wood has available capacity. Assigning students to Hoover-Wood aligns these developments with the District’s neighborhood school approach while using available space efficiently.
Why not keep J.B. Nelson?
J.B. Nelson is operating closer to capacity, and these developments are not within walking distance of that school. Assigning students to Hoover-Wood better aligns proximity and capacity.
When will a decision be made?
April 21.
When would it take effect?
July 1.
Will current students be affected?
No.
