BOARD HIGHLIGHTS
SUMMARY OF THE BATAVIA PUBLIC SCHOOL DISTRICT 101
BOARD OF EDUCATION MEETING
May 26, 2009
Prepared by JoAnne Walker, Administrative Assistant
Board of Education Regular Meeting
· Construction Update
Steve Straub, Vice President of Operations for Lamp Inc., presented an overview on the construction at Batavia High School. All rooms east of the main hallway will be renovated this summer; rooms on the west side will be done next summer. Demolition of some of the administrative areas that tie into the addition will also be done this summer. The temporary classrooms will be removed in June to make way for an additional parking lot. Mr. Straub expects that all classrooms east of the new canopy on Wilson Street will be open by fall.
The large retention pond on the west side of the building will be finished and landscaped. The kitchen and receiving area are online to be opened this fall. Work on the music area and the auditorium will not be finished until next summer. The PE Center will be completed during the 2010-2011 school year.
Work on the Rotolo Middle School gymnasium addition is progressing well and should be under roof in two weeks. It is also expected to be open this fall.
· Naviance
Kristin Malone, Counselor at Batavia High School, presented an update on Naviance, a web-based planning and advising system for schools to manage courses, assist students and parents with the college application process and collect BHS specific data. Students and parents have access to this program via the BHS website.
Counselors, teachers and administrations have access to student’s college search information including transcripts, teacher recommendation letters and scholarship searches. The program also provides students and parents information on when transcripts, letters of recommendations, etc., have been sent to the colleges.
Ms. Malone noted that data shows that in 2008-09 students accessed the system 4,514 times, parents accessed it 630 times. There were 1,335 applications sent to 130 colleges, 184 scholarships were posted and 313 letters of recommendation were requested.
· Conference Realignment
Principal Drexler is recommending the Board consider accepting the invitation to join the Upstate Eight Conference beginning with the 2010-2011 school year. Batavia is currently affiliated with the Western Sun Conference. Kaneland, Yorkville, DeKalb, Sycamore and Rochelle want to pull out of the conference because they feel the more rural schools are not compatible with the larger, more suburban schools. If they pull out it would make the Western Sun Conference defunct after next year.
Batavia and Geneva have received an invitation to join the Upstate Eight Conference. The conference consists of two divisions based on student enrollment. Batavia would be part of the smaller division that includes Geneva, Elgin High School, Larkin High School, St. Charles East, St. Charles North and Streamwood High School.
