BPS101 administration in consultation with the Kane County Health Department has determined that the extension of current school closings is prudent. Based on the recommendation of the Kane County Health Department:
- ROTOLO MIDDLE SCHOOL WILL RE-OPEN THURSDAY, MAY 7, 2009
- BATAVIA HIGH SCHOOL WILL RE-OPEN FRIDAY, MAY 8, 2009
This preventative measure is to disrupt the transmission of the H1N1 virus.
All student activities, practices and meetings planned for these buildings are canceled. This includes all home and away athletic competitions and practices, all extracurricular activities as well as any building usage by community members during this time period. Changes in school activities will be communicated by school administrators.
The Kane County Health Department further recommends that staff, faculty, and students not gather in groups in the community, since that would defeat the goal of disrupting disease transmission. The Kane County Health Department is working closely with BPS101 administration to protect all students, staff and faculty. Further lab testing at the CDC is pending before these “probable” cases are “confirmed.”
"The ongoing cooperation of student, staff, and community is essential to ensure the safety of our children," Superintendent Jack Barshinger said Saturday morning. "Our goal is to have our schools open as soon as possible. In order to accomplish that goal, it will take the cooperation of everyone."
The Kane County Health Department is working with the affected individuals and health providers to assure that the best protection, treatment, and containment measures are being taken. The Kane County Health Department maintains a call center for residents who have questions about the H1N1 virus: (630) 208-3315. The call line will be open from 8 am-8 pm on week days and from 9 am -1 pm on Saturday.
We urge that all of our residents monitor their health and follow basic prevention measures. Everyday actions people can take to stay healthy are:
- Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze. Throw the tissue in the trash after you use it.
- Wash your hands often with soap and water, especially after you cough or sneeze. Alcohol-based hand cleaners are also effective.
- Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth.
- Try to avoid close contact with sick people.
- If you get sick, the CDC recommends that you stay home from work or school and limit contact with others.
The Kane County Health Department is recommending that residents who are experiencing symptoms such as fever, lethargy, lack of appetite and/or coughing seek medical advice by either calling or visiting their doctor. The symptoms of the H1N1 virus in people are expected to be similar to the symptoms of regular seasonal influenza. Some people with the virus also have reported runny nose, sore throat, nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea.
